Completing several shops for Shopper’s View has been a very disappointing experience overall.

The company offers very inconsistent support. Sometimes it is excellent and at other times it is non-existent with no response to web mail or email which can affect a contractor’s work and bottom line.

Processing and payment delays, and frequent complications requiring excessive time to resolve are other disappointing aspects of this company’s performance. Compensation is terribly inadequate for the demands with some lower end assignments. For these low end shops, unreasonable demands on a contractor’s time are common with assignments consuming four hours or more from prep to completion for less than $1 dollar per hour. The assignments do not meet standards for federal minimum wage which the company will assert it is not legally obligated to meet when using independent contractor labor rather than statutatory employees.

Low end telephone shops advertised as simple inquiry often do not disclose research requirements until after acceptance of the assignment. A contractor can not access guidelines until after an assignment is confirmed. The company threatens penalties for cancellations. Each undisclosed research requirement can take an additional 30 minutes to complete, and may include finding cross streets, landmarks, adjacent businesses, and telephone numbers. Background materials, often 12 to 15 pages requiring an hour or more to read for each assignment are frequently demanded after the confirmation. Length of these materials and time requirements are not disclosed in advertising summaries that tout the assignment as a simple telephone inquiry for $4 or $5. Follow up requirements listed in the guidelines are hidden from view in the summary and may entail as much as three hours of additional time.

When assignments are graded and compensated, they are frequently completed by incompetent graders who are themselves unfamiliar with the extensive requirements and demands. Most often they fail to pay for work completed, even when it is completed according to guidelines, based either on their lack of information, or subjective and severe interpretations of 10 or 15 pages of copious and sometimes contradictory instructions. The additional time it takes a contractor to respond to inaccurate grades, or to review the excuses for excluded pay and have them removed puts contractor compensation into the negative. A contractor will actually spend more time and money dealing with complications than he or she makes for each assignment. When total time and costs are factored there is only a liability.

In addition, the tone of the graders is often threatening, condescending, and abusive. It is not uncommon to receive an incorrect grade based on incorrect information accompanied by refusal to pay for completed work, and a threatening remark such as You will not be assigned any further shops. Although this can be addressed by contacting a supervisor or department head, it is not worth a contractor’s time to deal with these kinds of issues.
